Developing Coaching Capacity<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<\/h4>\nHow do we do it?<\/h4>\n
Cotsen develops effective teacher coaches through careful selection<\/strong>, investment in their development<\/strong>, and support of their practice\u00a0<\/strong>over two years.<\/p>\nSelection:<\/strong> At each program school, we use classroom observation and interviews to select one teacher to serve as a full-time mentor to a cohort of Fellows working to improve their practice.<\/p>\nDevelopment: Cotsen Mentors develop their coaching capacity through<\/strong><\/p>\n\n- Professional learning in coaching techniques<\/li>\n
- Professional development in the specific content areas their Fellows are working in<\/li>\n
- Observing and debriefing excellent teaching<\/li>\n
- Being part of a cohort of other Mentors across the region<\/li>\n
- Coaching and support from Cotsen staff<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Practice: Mentors support their Fellows by<\/strong><\/p>\n\n- Participating with Fellows in content-specific professional development and coaching them on how to apply and refine it<\/li>\n
- Working through weekly coaching cycles of planning, observing, and debriefing instruction<\/li>\n
- Researching and recommending professional learning resources<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n
What are the results?<\/h4>\n
The investment Cotsen makes in developing mentors builds their coaching capacity<\/strong>, with immediate benefits to the Fellows they work with, and shapes their career trajectory<\/strong> in education.<\/p>\nCoaching capacity:<\/strong> In a survey of alumni mentors, overwhelming majorities (85%+) said the training they received from Cotsen had a \u201cMajor\u201d or \u201cTransformational\u201d impact on their performance in all nine coaching skills they were asked about:<\/p>\n\n- Providing non-evaluative feedback on teaching<\/li>\n
- Facilitating teacher reflection without directing it<\/li>\n
- Recommending appropriate PD or resources for professional goals<\/li>\n
- Facilitating teacher inquiry groups<\/li>\n
- Gathering data through a classroom observation<\/li>\n
- Analyzing student work to determine instructional implications<\/li>\n
